Titleist DCI

Oh the DCI. How I love thee... When I was growing up, the DCI was my ultimate dream set of irons. I know, it seems a little silly now with all the amazing clubs on the market, but back then, the DCI was on the forefront of technology and all the great players I knew were playing them. Starting with the original black and yellow colors, the DCI was one of the first solid cavity back set to be played by serious players. Next came the DCI oversize and the DCI oversize plus. Both a respectable set of irons, but not yet what they would become.

In 1997, it all changed. Titleist released the DCI 962. The sweetest set of irons besides the Mizunos. My favorite set was the DCI 962B, which featured a smaller cavity back to play a bit more like blades. I remember David Duval playing with these when he shot a 29 on the back 9 somewhere out west. I knew those were the clubs I wanted. Unfortunately, I wasn't good enough to seriously consider getting those. But now you can pick them up on eBay for a steal!

The next generation was great too, though not as life changing. Titleist released the DCI 990 and 981. The 990 were sort of a muscle-backed cavity design made from high quality cast iron. This set was seriously amazing to play with. The 981 featured a larger sweet spot and a bit of an offset. As a traditionalist, one that loved to play with the toughest clubs on the market, I preferred the 990s.

Before it all ended for the DCI, they came out with the 962 and 822. Honestly, these are great clubs but if I was in the market for a set of irons, I would stick with the 990 or 990b. If you're looking for some nice playability, I recommend the 962 for sure, but it just doesn't have the same nostalgia attached
